Page 1 - Introduction Madrid is one of the most fascinating cities we have visited. It is opulent with an impressive variety of attractions, and its atmosphere is magical and unique. One can tour it for over a week and not get bored. If you are looking for a nice inexpensive hotel, head for hotel Puerta de Toledo. The hotel's phone number is: 91-474-7100. Address: Glorieta puerta de toledo 4. Page 2 - The Prado Museum There are a few museums which we categorized as must-see sites in Madrid. One of them is, of-course, the Prado Museum. It is an enormously sized museum, which holds a wide variety of art works, among them are works by Gouyet, Velasquez, and more. Highly recommended. Openening hours: Tuesday - Saturday: 9:00 - 19:00. Sunday: 9:00 - 14:00. Closed on Monday. Addmission fees are charged, except on Saturday. Page 3 - The Retiro Gardens More in the area of the Prado Museum are the Retiro Gardens. It is a large park, where you can have a picnic, or just take a walk. Page 4 - The Retiro Gardens In Retiro park, you'll find a great lake, interesting statues, a variety of vegetation, large lawns, fountains and sweet, friendly squirrels. Page 5 - The Retiro Gardens If you are fond of animals, the squirrels in the Retiro park are quite an experience. They are not afraid of humans, and they even approach people asking for food. Equip yourselves with bread or fruit, and you can feed them right off your palm. Page 6 - The Retiro Gardens More in Retiro park: a beautiful glass palace, and a rose garden. The park is a refreshing green spot in the noisy big city. Page 7 - The Retiro Gardens It is recommended to visit Retiro park, and get away from the smoke and noise of the city. Admission is free of charge. Page 8 - The Botanical Garden Right across the street from the Prado Museum is the Botanical Garden. It is a magical garden with thousands of kinds of flowers in it, in every shape and color. The admissions fees are very minor, and you are definitely recommended to enter. Page 9 - The Botanical Garden At the Botanical Gardens you'll find benches, special garden-beds and lawns. Devote to the place about an hour of your time, and in that time you should be able to cover the majority of the garden. Opening hours: 10:00 - 20:00. Page 10 - Netptune Square and Congress Houses More in the area of the Prado Museum: Neptune Square and the Congress Houses. Page 11 - The Reina Sofia Museum and the Atocha train station Another interesting museum in the area is the Reina Sofia Museum. The museum contains a large selection of modern art: video, sculpture, paintings, music and more. It is an interesting experience. Opening hours: Wednesday - Monday: 10:00 - 21:00. Closed on Tuesday. Next to the museum, you can easily spot the Atocha train station. The structure is interesting and conspicuous. Page 12 - Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museo de Cera Another wonderful museum is the Thyssen-Bornemisza, which is on The Prado Avenue. In it, you'll find an impressive selection of Monet, Picasso, Sezan, Van Gogh, Gogen, Braque, Mondrean, and more. A mandatory site for art fans. For wax sculpture fans, there is a lovely wax museum in Madrid (although it doesn't get anywhere near as big as the one in London). Page 13 - Museo de Cera The wax museum is called Museo de Cera, where you'll find images of celebrities, and a 'horror room'. It is on Paseo de Recoletos Street. Opening hours: 10:30 - 14:00, and 16:00 - 21:00, daily. Admission fees are charged. Next to the museum you'll find the wide Cologne Square, and around it - transportation and restaurants. In the area, you'll also find an archeology museum, with an interesting collection of articles. Opening hours: Tuesday - Saturday: 9:30 - 20:30. Sunday: 9:30 - 14:30. Closed on Monday. Page 14 - Romantic Museum More in the area: a very impressive victory gate: Puerta de Alcala. A small and charming museum is the Romantic Museum. It is an eighteenth century house, detailed to the maximum: furniture, musical instruments, porcelain pieces, and a collection of Gouyet paintings. It is a tiny museum, but very interesting. Opening hours: Tuesday - Sunday: 9:00 - 15:00. Closed on Mondays, and on August. At a short walking distance from the museum you'll find the Santa-Barbara Square, from which you'll have convenient transportation. Page 15 - Romantic Museum Another interesting museum is the Lazaro Galdiano Museum, which is similar in style to the Romantic Museum. Once again, it is an ancient house with furniture, jewelry, statues, clocks, miniatures and a collection of Gouyet paintings. The museum is in the area of the Cologne Square, on Serrano Street. Opening hours: Tuesday - Sunday: 10:00 - 16:00. Closed on Monday. There is a lovely, impressive Church in Madrid, called S. Fransisco el Grande. You can tour it, and make your own impression of it. Another interesting Church is the La Almudena Church. Page 16 - Plaza Mayor Square An interesting Madrid square is the Plaza Mayor Square, a central, impressive square with restaurants, and in the middle of it - an interesting statue. It is a very central place in Madrid, and it will help you orientate. Page 17 - Sgobia Bridge If you are fond of walks, you can take an interesting walk from Plaza Mayor Square, to Sgobia Bridge. On your way there, you'll run into a magical, peaceful park, where you'll be able to rest. From Sgobia Bridge itself, you'll be able to see a tiny waterfall, and a small creek, which stream under it. Page 18 - Puerta del Sol & Torre Espana Another central square in Madrid is the Puerta del Sol Square, which is really the center of Madrid. There, you'll find convenient transportation, many stores and restaurants. In a slightly less central area of Madrid, you'll find a tall tower called Torre Espana. The tower is built in an interesting fashion, but it has no touristic appeal, and it cannot be entered. Around it is a nice park with benches and large lawns, called Quinta Fuente del Berro. Page 19 - Plaza De Toros An impressive structure is the Plaza De Toros - the bull ring. It is nice to look at the structure from the outside, and since we personally highly oppose bull fights, we certainly won't recommend you to go inside. Page 20 - Plaza De Toros Another interesting tourist attraction in Madrid is the Egyptian Temple - it is an ancient Egyptian temple, from the fourth century BC. Around it are lovely lookouts which overlook the entire city, and nearby, are the nice gardens: Jardines Cuorrtel de la Montorn, where you'll find trees, lawns and benches. If you like markets, and you come by the city on a Sunday, you'll be able to find a bargain market called El Rastro. Although it is a crowded market, you'll easily find inexpensive clothes, footwear, miniatures, house tools, etc... Here we concluded our tour of Madrid, hoping we had covered most of the main attractions. | |
