Page 1 - The road to Triberg Our journey begins at Munich (Munchen), where we landed. We toured Germany for a short while, mainly in the Black Forest area, and proceeded on to Austria, and then back to Munich. From the airport, we drove to the charming city of Triberg, which is in the Black Forest area. We headed west on highway A8 (E8), until Stuttgart, and from it - southward to highway A81 (E41). From the highway, you should turn at interchange 35 and drive on the E351 westward, all the way to Triberg. Page 2 - Triberg The city is small and sweet, and is definitely worth a visit. It is located between mountains and magical scenery, and seems as if taken out of a fairy tale. In it, you can find restaurants, and little unique shops which specialize in wooden ornaments, local work such as cuckoo wall clocks, carved wooden angels, little dolls, wooden horses, etc... They are rather highly priced, but if you look hard enough, you might find some bargains. Page 3 - Triberg An interesting attraction in the town is the Triberg Waterfalls. The access to the waterfalls is very convenient, and they are next to the main pedestrian-only street, which is teeming with shops. Admission fees are charged, open until sundown. You can tour the area for an hour, and then come down, or you can continue upwards for a longer walk. The waterfalls are right in the forest, as is the town, and they seem an integral part of it. Page 4 - Triberg Right near the entrance to the waterfalls, there is a small, sweet, local restaurant (don't confuse it with the fast-food stand standing right next to it). Order Schpezelach - the typical Austrian delicatessen (a kind of Pasta). The restaurant is designed in a unique style: On every table there are candles and antique lamps, and it overlooks the forest around it. A very enjoyable experience for a small fee. In the city, you'll also be able to find Zimmers (Bed&Breakfast) to sleep in at nights. We slept near Triberg, in another town called Schonwald. An adjacent town, little smaller, filled with charming Zimmers, and a wonderful view. Page 5 - Triberg area More in the area: a few small, sweet towns, connected with beautiful roads. It is recommended to drive around a little between the towns, and be impressed by the peace, the quiet, and the view. If you are coming during the right season, you'll be able to see apple trees teeming with red apples, or if you come during a different season, you may catch them in their bloom of white flowers. Anyway, it is a marvelous sight. Page 6 - Triberg area From there, we drove to the nearby Candle mountain, from which you'll have a nice lookout of the whole area. The way up the mountain is quite long and passes through a thick forest. The large open lawns at the top definitely call for a picnic - if the weather is nice and you are fans of quiet and pastoral views - you should enter a supermarket buy some groceries, sit on one of the green hills and throw a picnic. Another recommendation: All the little towns on the side of the roads are filled with special bakeries with all sorts of excellent breads and cakes. You should try them. Page 7 - Furtwangen From there, we drove to the town of Furtwangen (south of Triberg), and then to Freiburg - a plain, and not too interesting town. There is no reason to enter it other than shopping necessities. From it, we drove to the Bavarian District. It is filled with small towns, which are usually very similar to one another. Page 8 - Konstanz We entered a town called Konstanz, and one can presume that it is no different the other towns in the region... You can reach Konstanz by driving south on road 500 and east on road 31, up to the A81 (E41) highway, and head south once you're on it. Page 9 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau A must-see attraction is the Flower Island: Insel Mainau (you'll find convenient directions from the area of Konstanz. Reserve at least 4 hours for this place, even though one can easily spend a whole day there. Page 10 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau Admission fees are charged for the Flower Island, opening hours vary from season to season, and it's recommended to check in advance. Page 11 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau It is an enormous island, connected to dry land with a rather narrow path with a road for buses, and a path for pedestrians. You'll have to park your car at the entrance, even before you reach the walking path. Page 12 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau From the parking lot, you can take a special bus to the island, or walk to it (approximately 20 minutes walk). We walked, since we didn't want to miss out on the beautiful sights along the way. The path is adjacent to a lake, and all the way to the island you'll see many ducks and swans. Page 13 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau On the flower island itself, there is an enormous selection of various flowers, trees and bushes. There are bushes trimmed in various shapes, and there are rare flowers. There is a small area with rabbits, a small display of a miniature train driving itself between the flowery garden-beds, statues, benches and of-course small coffee shops which you can rest in. Page 14 - The Flower Island - Insel Mainau When on Insel Mainau, don't miss the impressive Butterfly World: It is a gigantic hall, with a Tropical living environment: large trees, unique flowers, waterfalls and rocks, and in-between all of those, thousands of variously sized and colored butterflies fly freely. It is a really beautiful sight. Keep in mind that the indoor temperatures are very high (Tropical climate), and it is recommended to take off layers of clothing before entering - it is quite a heat shock. Page 15 - The road to Lindau From the flower island, we drove to the Lindau and it's peninsula. We took a water shuttle from Konstanz, and so we crossed to the other side (an experience in itself), and from it, headed east on road 31 (E34) all the way up to Lindau. Page 16 - Lindau island Lindau is partly located on an island. The island is adorable, but it is not recommended to sleep on it, because even though it is filled with hotels and Zimmers, we spent half the night wandering around trying to find a vacant hotel or Zimmer, because it is so toured. The place is teeming with restaurants, it has a nice promenade, and many tourists. Page 17 - Lindau island From there, we headed toward the city of Fussen: Northeast on road 12, onto road 12n (southward), followed by road A7 (E532), up to Fussen. Next to the city, you'll find a castle which seems as if taken right out of a fairy tale. The road to the city is twined with small towns, which take pride in their carpentry - recommended to stop and take a peek for those of you who like wooden crafts. Next to the city, you'll also find a lake - Forggen. It is an amiable lake, although it's nothing special. You can walk around it, or have a picnic near its bank. Page 18 - The road to Garmisch-Partenkirchen From Forggen, we drove to the town of Wies, where you'll find an interesting Church. We headed north on road 17, until the right turn to to Wies or to Wildsteig. Then, you should look for directions to a small side road which leads to the Church of Wies. From Wies, back to the main road, eastward on road 23, and from there - southward to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.On the road we encountered a nice palace. Page 19 - The road to Garmisch-Partenkirchen We drove to the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen; This town used to be two separate cities, that were combined to one. In the winter, it is a main attraction for the skiers, who gather in the town and then leave for the resorts. In the off-season it can mainly be a nice place to spend the nights. We had slept in a gorgeous Zimmer, overlooking a beautiful view, called Gastehaus Christina, which is located in 61 Burgstrase St., telephone: 088211334, Fax: 0882154210. The owners of the guest house are very kind, and they speak excellent English. There are rooms which are cheap and small, which don't have any view, and fancy, large rooms which include a kitchen, have view of the mountains, and are rented usually for a few days. Since we had arrived late at night, and that room wasn't rented out, we got it for a relatively low price... for one night. If you are fans of Italian food, you'll find an excellent Italian restaurant called Venice on the main street. You can ask at your hotel or Zimmer. It is hard to miss, because of its grand size in comparison to the rest of the rather small city. Page 20 - Krun From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we passed through the city of Krun (eastward on road 2). There is nothing special about this town besides some nicely decoratively painted houses. Page 21 - Walchen See lake From Krun we proceeded to the Walchen See lake (northward on road 11). The lake is by the roadside. Page 22 - Walchen See lake Walchen See is a lovely lake which you can walk around, but if it has been raining, you are recommended to keep away from the bank of the lake, because the ground is muddy and very slippery. From there we drove to the shopping town of Miesbach - a very nice, yet very expensive town, and from it - on to the town of Prien. Page 23 - The Palace of King Ludwig the Second From Prien, we sailed to an island on the Chiem See lake, in order to see the palace of King Ludwig the Second. To get to prien: Drive north on road 11, then eastward on road 472 toward Bad-Toiz, until highway A8 (E52), and further east. Page 24 - The Palace of King Ludwig the Second In Prien, you'll find dozens of restaurants filled with tourists making their way to the palace. The palace tour is performed in German, (an English tour is provided every few hours), and as we do not speak German, we found the tour very boring. It is approximately an hour long. Admission fees for the palace are charged, as are fees for the sail to it. Around the palace there is a garden (and a fountain), in which you can walk freely. A nice place, but that's it. Unless you are very fond of places, you can skip it. Page 25 - The road to Austria From there we crossed the border over to the Austrian side, where we spent the rest of trip (see course: Ausrtia). | |
