Page 1 - The Costa Dorada region Our trip to Spain's northern coastal area commenced in Barcelona, and ended in the town of Figueras, from which we proceeded on to the Pyrenees Mountains (see: The Pyrenees Route). We toured the area for a few days, but you can repose on these magical beaches for as long as you like... Page 2 - The Costa Dorada region Most of the bay cities are touristic cities designed mainly for vacationers. Most of them are filled to the extent with hotels (for all budgets), restaurants, boardwalks, and of-course beaches with sparkling golden sands, and peaceful azure water. We started out from the Costa Dorada region, and on to Costa Brava. Page 3 - The Costa Dorada region From Barcelona, we drove toward the town of Callela, on highway A19. We didn't like the town very much, probably because of its short distance from Barcelona, it was somewhat overpopulated. The town is filled with hotels, some of them especially cheap, but if you are not in a hurry, it is better to proceed further north, and stay in one of the other beach towns. Page 4 - The town of Blanes From Callela, we drove to the town of Blanes (through highway 682). The road that leads to this town, and in general, to most of the towns, is absolutely beautiful: Small mini-bays, dark-green wild vegetation and brown, grooved rocks, overlooking a shiny blue sea. This town is, again, a bay-town, with a lovely island in it. Most of the towns are quite similar, and you can decide according to the amount of time you have which of them to enter. Page 5 - The town of Tossa From here we moved on to the town of Tossa. The road is very tortuous but provides a beautiful view of many small coastal bays (GI682 road, marked on the map as green). For those with the tendency to get carsick, be sure to equip yourselves with plenty of water, and make sure you make short stops every now and again. Since the road is as it is, driving on it is hard. In Tossa, there is a fortress, on which you can observe, the streets of the town are rather small and filled with tourist shops, but other than that, nothing is unusual or unique about it. Page 6 - The town of Fornells From it, we traveled to the town of Sant Feliu, still on the GI 682, and onward to the town of Tamariu - another lovely bay town. From Tamariu, we drove to the town of Fornells de Mar. In this town there is a remarkable hotel in which we spent two nights. If you are in the area, we recommend staying there. The hotel is called Bonaigua. Telephone: 972-622050, Fax: 972-622054, Address: Platja de Fornells D.P. 17255. Ask for a room in a high floor, and so you'll be able to see the magnificent view. In the evening, it is recommended to eat at the fantastic hotel restaurant. If you are coming in the summertime, or when the weather is still cozy in the evenings, sit outside among the strawberry trees. Dinner lasts quite a long time, but the food is great, the Sangria is excellent, and the atmosphere is magical (the dinners are more or less standard; a different menu every day, with few items to choose from). It is an ideal place for a vacation. The place isn't too crowded with tourists, and right next to the hotel there is a great beach. You can also bathe in a number of other beaches in the area (a few minutes by car), and come back to the hotel in the evening. Page 7 - The Aigua Blava beach A magical beach that is worth visiting is the Aigua Blava beach, which is right next to the hotel. It is a sweet and pastoral beach for bathing, or just a short walk. Page 8 - The town of Begur From this region we traveled to the Costa Brava region. We had entered the town of Begur, which is filled with amazing villas owned by the rich people of the area. It is worthwhile to stroll around the town by foot, and see the impressive villas and the miniature fort on the mountain peak. Page 9 - Salvador Dali museum (Figueras) From there, we drove to Figueras, through the C255 road, onto the A7 (E15) highway, all the way up to Figueras. This isn't a bay-town anymore, but it is recommended for its famous Salvador Dali museum. Page 10 - Salvador Dali museum (Figueras) It seems as if the entire town supports itself from this museum. The town is very boring but it is recommended to visit the museum. Opening hours: 10:00 to 17:30. In the summertime: 9:00 to 19:00. Admission fees are charged. Page 11 - The bay-town of Port-lligat From Figueras, we drove to the bay-town of Port-lligat, on road N260, followed by GI614. In the town, you can stroll the beach, or you can take a guided tour of the home of the painter, Salvador Dali (every one hour). Keep in mind that you may have to wait a while before the next guided tour. Page 12 - Figueras From this town, we went back to Figueras (in which there is a large selection of hotels), from which we drove to the Pyrenees Mountains (see: Pyrenees Mountains route). | |
